You open the website — it doesn’t load. Panic, then the phone.
Stop for five minutes. This order of checks finds the cause, and sometimes the solution.
1. Is it down for everyone or just for you
Open downforeveryoneorjustme.com and enter the address.
If it works there — the problem is on your side: your internet connection, DNS cache or browser. Try from a phone on mobile data.
This settles more than half of all panics.
2. What exactly does the message say
The difference matters:
“This site can’t be reached” — the server isn’t responding. Hosting or DNS.
500 Internal Server Error — the server works, but the website is crashing. A plugin, the theme or code.
“Error establishing a database connection” — the database. See point 5.
A blank white page — a PHP error with error display switched off.
A security warning — the SSL certificate has expired.
3. Has the domain been paid for
The most embarrassing cause, and more common than you think.
Check on WHOIS when it expires. If it has expired, the website and email stop working the same day.
The most common story: the reminders went to an email address nobody reads.
4. Has the hosting been paid for
The same again. Most hosts suspend an account after a few days of late payment, but not all of them warn you loudly.
5. A database error
Three possible causes:
- The database password was changed but not updated in
wp-config.php - The server quota has been exceeded
- The database is overloaded
Check in cPanel that the database exists and how much space it uses.
6. The SSL has expired
The browser shows a warning and most visitors turn back.
Let's Encrypt renews automatically — but if the renewal failed, you can renew it manually from cPanel in a minute.
If everything looks fine but it still doesn’t work
Check whether you did anything in the last 24 hours: an update, a new plugin, a DNS change. Most often the cause is the last thing you touched.
If you have a backup from before the change — restore it. That is faster than searching.
When to call
