Joomla or WordPress — an honest answer for 2026

The question usually comes from people who have inherited a Joomla website and are wondering whether to migrate it.

I’ll be direct: for a new website, in most cases, WordPress. But there are cases where that doesn’t hold.

Why WordPress for a new project

People who know it. There are far more of them. If you need help tomorrow or want to change developers — with WordPress you have a choice.

Plugins. For almost any need there is a ready-made solution, usually several.

Easier for the client. You publish an article — it is on the website. No menu items, no module positions.

When Joomla is better

Complex access levels. Joomla has built-in user groups and access levels that WordPress only gets through plugins. For a website where different groups see different content, that is a real advantage.

Multilingual websites. It is built in, not an add-on. For a website in three or four languages, that is simpler.

An existing website that works. If the Joomla website is stable and has a lot of content, migrating is expensive and risky. You don’t change it just because of fashion.

If you have a Joomla website

The question isn’t “should I migrate”, but “is it holding me back in some way”.

If it works, gets updated and the content is maintained — leave it. Migrating means a new design, moving the content and the risk of losing your Google rankings.

But if every change needs a developer and nobody wants to work with it — that is a real reason.

If you do migrate

  • Make a list of all the existing addresses
  • Plan a redirect for each one
  • Move the content before you switch the domain
  • Test everything on a temporary address

Without redirects, traffic from Google drops and doesn’t come back quickly.

What they have in common

Both need updates, backups and attention. And with both, the biggest risk is the same: an abandoned extension left sitting there for years.

Even the best platform becomes a problem within a year without a caretaker — that applies equally to both.
