The website is slow. The first thought: “the hosting is weak, I need a stronger one”.
Sometimes that is true. More often it isn’t — and the upgrade just gives you a slow website on a more expensive server.
The two-minute test
Create an empty page on the server. A file called test.php containing only:
<?php echo "ok"; ?>
Open it and see how long it takes.
Under 200 milliseconds — the server is fine. The problem is in the website.
Over a second — the server is overloaded or far away.
That is the difference between “I need better hosting” and “I need a clean-up”.
When it really is the hosting
A shared server with too many neighbours. On cheap plans, hundreds of websites share the same resources. When one of them gets a traffic spike, everyone slows down.
Location. A server in America for visitors in Europe adds 150–200 milliseconds to every request. For a website with many elements, that adds up.
An old PHP version. PHP 8 is almost twice as fast as 7.4. This is a hosting setting, and changing it is free.
No SSD. It is standard today, but there are still plans running on old disks.
When it is the website — more often
4 MB images. The most common cause, and no server can fix it.
Thirty plugins, half of them unnecessary.
A page builder that loads a mountain of CSS to show three lines of text.
No caching. Every visitor triggers a full calculation from scratch.
A bloated database. Years of revisions, spam comments and leftovers from deleted plugins.
An order that saves money
- The empty-page test — it tells you where the problem is
- If it is the website: images, caching, plugins — in that order
- PHP on the latest version
- Measure again
- Only then think about more powerful hosting
In most cases, by the third step an upgrade is no longer needed.
When an upgrade is justified
If you have done everything above and the server still responds slowly — then yes. Especially if you have a store with many products or traffic that keeps growing.
But then you upgrade for a reason, not out of hope.
Speed starts with the server. NVMe drives and caching in every plan.
